The following timeline represents events taking place after the birth of the Afghan Girl.

1972-1974: The 'Afghan Girl', Sarbat Gula is born. The exact date is unknown as the there are no records to track the births and deaths of most people in Afghanistan.

1978: First Communist President seizes control of Afghanistan in coup.

1979, December: 80,000 Soviet Troops cross the Afghan border to replace the
president. Roughly 5 million refugees move to Iran and Pakistan.

1980's, The Soviets lay over 5 million mines in their effort to occupy the country and fight resistance.

1984: The first photo of the 'Afghan Girl' is taken.

1988: USSR withdraws troops. Upon withdrawl of Soviet troops, Afghanistan is run by People's Democratic party for the next 14 years.

February, 1989: Soviets withdraw last remaining troops from Afghanistan.

September, 1996: Taliban captures the capital and oust President Burhanuddin Rabbani.

2002: Steve McCurry travels to Afghanistan to find the 'Afghan Girl' and document the events of her life over the 17 years since the first photo was taken.

2002: National Geographic starts the Afghan Girls fund to help pay for educating future generations of girls in Afghanistan.
