The
Afghan Girl. . . A Life Revealed?
The Afghan Girl = Sharbat Gula? |
||
-Introduction |
After
the initial photographs were sent to the United States for analysis,
the team was notified that the photographs were not of high enough
quality to confirm a match to the one's McCurry took in 1984. The team
returned to ask permission to take more carefully planned photographs
in order to achieve the quality required for utilizing retinal scanning
software. The second set of Thomas Musheno, specialist for the FBI, determined that the individual in both photographs were in fact the same person, a fact later verified by the computer analysis of her iris patterns. It was final, the Afghan Girl had survived the hardships of occupation under the Soviet Union and oppression by the Taliban. As the team learned about more of Sharbat's past the pieces to the puzzle of what happened to her after the first photograph was taken in 1984 became more clear. The team also learned of her family life, and hardships due to the poor economy and drought. |
