The people of Afghanistan live in a location that has been the fought over for thousands of years. In the last thirty years alone, two superpowers have invaded and occupied, and the first left a legacy of unexploded ordinance and land mines. The image of the Afghan Girl inspired many, and helped people see the humanity caught in the middle of these conflicts. The perserverance of these people and their drive to provide a better future for their children really makes them no different from us.

The test of our understanding of these people's hardships will be our determination to help their country rebuild. If successful, the likelyhood that future generations will be affected by war, drought, and a poor standard of living will be greatly reduced. If abandoned to fend for themselves, the cycle of oppresive rule will no doubt continue as the different groups within this culture struggle for control.
