Prerequisite Knowledge
Students entering the MHCI program are expected to have a basic background in each of the areas of Programming, Statistics and Design. Typically this background is obtained through under-graduate level courses, and we have listed the equivalent courses offered at CMU. However, self-education or work experience can be offered for consideration to fulfill these pre-requisites. All prerequisites must be reviewed and approved by the Program Director before the student will be credited with having fulfilled that prerequisite.
GRE (Graduate Record Examination). Take the GRE general test. You should arrange for the ETS to send your official scores directly to institution code #2074 (Carnegie Mellon University), department code #0402 (computer science). OFFICIAL SCORES FROM THE EDUCATIONAL TESTING SERVICE (ETS) ARE REQUIRED.
An applicant must have a baccalaureate degree in design or another field
from an accredited educational institution, with a strong record of academic
achievement, and be highly recommended by three references. Additionally,
it is desirable that applicants have at least two years of professional or
teaching experience. You must submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
scores, no older than two years, along with the completed application. All
applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores for the
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Test for Spoken English
(TSE). The TOEFL and TSE tests are administered by the Educational Testing
Service.* We expect TOEFL scores to be in the range of 600. Scores must
arrive in our office by February 1, 2005 for your application to be considered
for review.
For designers, a portfolio of design work is required for application. Acceptable
formats include a sleeve of twenty slides maximum, CD-ROMs, URLs, and/
or videotape. Please clearly describe the content and context of the work on
a separate page. For nondesigners, if your work is not appropriately represented
in any of the formats mentioned, please discuss an alternative with
the Director of Graduate Studies; call 412.268.2828. If the Admissions Committee
believes that an applicant needs additional design coursework prior
to entry, you may be required to take an intensive six-week design course
in the second half of the summer preceding the start of the fall semester.
Tuition for this course is not part of the regular tuition.
We will begin reviewing applications after February 1, 2005 for admission
in the fall semester, which begins in late August 2005. A campus visit and
meeting with faculty are strongly recommended, but not required.
Prof. Bruce Hanington is the Director of Graduate Studies. He will be glad
to meet with you or discuss the program by telephone or e-mail. For more
information or for an application packet, please call, write, or fax:
