In a world filled with technology there are a lot of things that influence us. "Technology is the knowledge that allows us to further our proficiency with and understanding of the world around us," (Maher, Olson, Best, Sours, and Rutherford). Our watches and clocks help us with time; computers and books help us advance our knowledge and expand our minds; internet allows us to connect with the rest of the world. But there is one technology that has without a doubt shaped the way that we live. It has replaced our clock, alarm clock, computer and paper books, connects us with internet, and people through the telephone and text messages. All of this in a 4" by 2.5" by ½" worth of technology, and sometimes smaller. Some would say that the cell phone is the worlds greatest invention or that it's "their life"(Door, interview). I admit, that sounds dramatic, but have you ever had to go a day without your phone? You feel naked and lost; you don't know what time it is and seem to forget where things are in your hometown, even if you don't need your GPS to get you there. Very rarely will you come across an individual without a cell phone. The ease and accessibility of this technology has changed the ways people function and grow. Is that a bad thing? That is something one must decide for themselves, but it seems that putting one's life in the "hands" of a device has not only encouraged us to rely solely on that device to come through in times of need. It also seems to have caused us to distance ourselves from this outside world that would otherwise be willing to help if we needed it.
